Seven accused members of German left-wing extremist organization face trial over series of attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has long been a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant formerly involved with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal offering assistance to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
